09-06-2000 I haven't updated for a month as I'm so busy. Well, but someone is working. The final hacking guide, written by Thundergod, Qing and I, is now ready to go public. Inside, you will find all the useful PAR codes and ZSNES savestate addresses, and many new stuffs are added when compared to the previous version. If you'd like to cheat or look at the rare techs which you can't get after 20-30 hours, this document is for you!

On the other hand, people who are interested in finding the secret place in the game should have found it already, and people who don't care probably remains indifferent. I have now put every single step into a single file to end this secret-hack-finding game. Hope this little addition has given you some fun and satisfaction which cannot be found in the original game.

I'll remain busy until Christmas. Things that I still plan to do is the SPC archive and the Ending Guide, but they probably won't come very soon. Check back some time later if you are interested.
08-04-2000 I thought I was on vacation, but in fact I was actually very busy and it will last until the end of the month. Anyway, thank you for other expert players who help answering questions on the message board. It is a nice board and hopefully everyone will find it useful.

News this week:

Still no name-editor for SNES9X: Badaro has told me that I can use winzip to decompress the Gzip format of the SNES9X savestate. Still, I'm too lazy to write an editor and write instructions. I find that many people simply don't read instructions/FAQ, so a new editor will only generate more questions, which I'm already quite tired to answer. Sorry.

FAQs: As I said earlier, that you can ignore all FAQs except the Patch FAQ. So don't raise questions whose answers can be found with this FAQ again! Thundergod is working to make my cheat doc perfect, and soon the greatest cheat doc on RS3 will come out. My Ending FAQ and the other FAQs are on hold since I don't have time to write them. Anyone interested can write them and let me know so that I can put them on my site.

Secret hack: Someone has just reached step 3 without hint. So it's not impossible, isn't it? As a result, I'll reveal steps 1 to 3 and give a hint on step 4. I still provide hints and separate the steps in different files. If you still want to find the secret place yourself without looking at my solution, don't read them.
07-29-2000 So it's been a week, and thanks for your support on the message board. I haven't been replying those "thank you" messages, but I read every one of them. Well, I hope that most of you will enjoy the game as much as I do. I'll have a short vacation from July 30 to Aug 2. So don't expect me to answer any questions or mails. I really need some rests.

Just want to clarify a few things in this update:

No name-editor for SNES9X: Sorry folks. I tried to make one, but unlike ZSNES save-states, the SNES9X save-states are compressed. Currently I have no mood nor skill to change the name within a compressed save-state. So if you can't run ZSNES at all, you are out of luck. If you can at least run ZSNES, follow what KLin suggested: save a game; load savegame in ZSNES; make a ZSNES save-state; use name editor to change the save-state; load save-state, then save a game; finally transfer the save-game to SNES9X and you can use SNES9X to play your remaining game with your preferred name.

FAQs: As I said earlier, that you can ignore all FAQs except the Patch FAQ. So don't raise questions whose answers can be found with this FAQ again! Thundergod is working to make my cheat doc perfect, and soon the greatest cheat doc on RS3 will come out. I still keep a few secrets with myself to protect my hack. But you won't be interested in those things anyway, will ya? :P

Secret hack: Seem like I make my secret place too difficult and random to find. :P It's still early, but I'll start giving steps or hints so that you don't go into a wrong direction. Each week I'll put a new step and a hint to the next step. Let's see how many clues I need to give until someone finds the place. People who think they can handle the difficulty by themselves don't click on the following links:

Well, what's the chance that the release will be delayed?.Pretty big, you may guess. But the fact is...

It is available NOW!

Thank you for waiting. Together with the patch v0.30 there are quite a few FAQs that I'm releasing. Take a look to see if anything interests you. However, you should at least take a look at the Patch FAQ or the readme file that comes with the patch, as I won't answer any questions that are already in there (or I'll answer sacrastically :) ). And, if you want to report bug or file a complain, please look at the Patch FAQ first before you do so. Other questions (like gameplay) can always be raised on the usual message board if you don't like to read the long FAQs that I have written..

A few things that's worth noted are:

Name editor: this program comes with patch can hack into a ZSNES save-state and replace the name of the main character. If you don't like the name "Katrina" and want to change it to "Katarina", normally you have to endure something like "K a t a r i n a" due to the compression scheme used. Now you can make it "Katarina" by using the program. See README.1ST file for details in using the program.

Secret hack:Where the hell is this place!? Well, I have given you, especially the beta testers and people who have already played this game, extra pleasure to find this SEKRIT place out. It is not easy (I hope :P), but it is not impossible. The place isn't big, but there are a few things there other than seeing the staff's not-so-nice-looking names.^_^ This place is not available in the original game, so the addition of it shouldn't affect original gameplay. Don't worry.

07-11-2000 To Beta Testers: 3 testers have already finished the game: (wraith), Badaro, and John. Thanks for their work! Now the public patch will be underway. If you still have bug reports to make, please do so before July 21. Otherwise, they won't make it before the release date. For those who have submitted reports, your name will be in the game somewhere (more about this later) as a souvenir. For those who claim to be beta testers but has never reported anything, you will be out. So if you have something, give it to me soon.

Thank you for your support on the message board. That really is a boost, making me feel that it is not a wrong decision to do something like this. Anyway, I know that waiting for something without knowing the exact date can be frustrating. Now that I have 3 testers done, the release is on the way. Although I'm not obligated to give anyone any dates, as a gift to those who made warm support on the messageboard, I'll provide a tentative release date for the public patch: July 23. So, soothe your need?

First of all, definition of "tentative" from my Oxford dictionary: (adj) made or done as a trial, to see the effect. So I'm not obligated to anything. Don't take this as seriously as Squaresoft's release date (well, sometimes they slip as well). All I'm saying is that I'll try my best to release the patch on or before that date. Take that as a 90% chance. Of course, if I can't make it, I'll post something here so everyone will know.

Why this date? Well, for no particular reasons, but I need to set a date that I feel comfortable with. There are things happening, and I'm busier than I thought, and I'm sick (again; geez, this project really deterioates my health). I still have to correct the bugs, finish my secret hack, and the name inserter program. With the program, one can enter customed names with a nicer look (no longer K a t a r i n a, but Katarina). Without the program, one has to stick with the original name, or get used to the wide separation of each alphabet, due to a not-so-easily-changed compression scheme that I use. This is some trade off.for a full translation. As for secret hack, more will be revealed later.

I have more to say, but that will be left until the patch is out. Various FAQs will be out or updated, too, so if you like to read and don't mind my bad English, you will get a lot of entertainment in the next weekend.

06-11-2000 Not much new for this update. I've been correcting bugs, and is debugging the Ruling Game and the Business Game. Improvements have been made. The Business Game is now playable, even though there are still some glitches (sentences too long, overwriting other texts, etc). I have a new beta tester replacing an existing one who can't test any more. Hopefully this one will send me some reports.

BTW, Sheex has opened up an IRC channel called #rs3 in DALNET. If you have experience with IRC or want to know some friends, try it out.. I just tried it yesterday the first time, and it took me some time to learn. Anyway, I think I won't spend too much time on that for I'm really busy. Use the message board if you want to tell me something.

06-06-2000 To Beta Testers: If you visit my web board regularly, you may know that a catastrophic system error of InsideTheWeb server has erased all the messages. Unfortunately, though I have read all of them, many reports have not yet been implemented. This means that many bug reports have disappeared before I make any use of them. Please repost any reports made after May 12 if you have back up, or try to remember some big bugs that you can think of. A good guy called (wraith) has kindly offered his server space and web design skill to provide me with a brand new board. Use it instead from now on.

So far 1 beta tester (again, the good (wraith)) has finished the game and reported the bugs. I have corrected all the bugs reported through e-mail and is waiting for reposts of the missing ones. I really hope to get this done soon. Not only because I'm getting very busy with my real work, but also I need some spare time to do some other things (like to play the new Square games :) ) Right now I'm debugging the Business Game. If I lose my interest in doing so, I may release an incomplete patch and you will have to bear with it. Stay tune for this month. BTW, I have updated the screenshots to soothe your anxious mood a little bit....

05-12-2000 To Beta Testers: Sorry guys, my v0.21 patch has introduced an infinite loop in my new compression stuffs (rewriting too many scripts force me to improve the compression routine and hence introduce new errors :( ). An emergency bug-fix patch (v0.22b) is released here to fix the bug. Apply this patch to the game which has been patched by v0.20 and v0.21b. i.e., if you got v0.21 already, just apply the new patch on top of it. If you still have v0.20, apply v0.21b first and then v0.22b. (Note: I distinguish the real patch and the bug-fix patches by adding a 'b' suffix.)

There should be nothing new other than fixing the locking bug. Sorry for the troubles.

The patches above ONLY fix for the original beta patch. It won't work if you apply it to a Japanese rom, so don't bother to download them if you are not a beta tester. So far most of the reports cover the first 20-50% of the game. It seems that no beta tester has finished the game yet. Thus I can't estimate the release date of the public patch. But it shouldn't be more than a month.

05-07-2000 To Beta Testers: a bug-fixed patch is released which supposingly fixes most bugs (not all) reported up to yesterday. You MUST apply this patch on top of the rom which has been patched by the older beta patch (v0.20), NOT a clean rom. See the readme.1st file for info about the patch. You can use this new patch to continue your game, or if you are interested in starting a new game after your current game, use it instead. If you report the bugs in the future, make sure you report the version of the patch as well. (Note: you should be able to get the snowman now if you want to. :) ) Things stated in the FAQ are still valid, so don't bother to report bugs that are already stated in there.

05-04-2000 To Beta Testers: I have added one item to the FAQ for Beta Testers. It's not really important, but if you have time, take a look. I'm slow these days but I'll work more during weekend. The schedule of my job is very tight right now, so I can't even post a lot to the WWWBoard during work from now on. Continue to use the board, though. Some of you are doing a nice job, and well assured that I have read all of your reports, even though I don't have time yet to handle all of them. I'd recommend you to save your reports somewhere at the same time when you submit them to the WWWBoard, in case the board is erased for unknown reasons.

This is just an update. A few of the beta testers work very hard to give me bug reports. I'm happy to know that most of them are enjoying the game at the same time. But now I have more than 100 corrections to make, and more are coming. I have to carefully organize the lists from many people to avoid missing some during the debug period. In fact I have problem catching up, as I'm very busy in my real life, so please understand that I'm working slowly at the moment (but I'm still working almost every day). I actually want to get this off my shoulder as soon as I can, but unfortunately free time is limited. Therefore I'll set priorities of things that I want to fix now. Some people have good suggestions, like keeping "Aurum" instead of "Gold" which I have translated to, but those will be left later if time permits. I want to put the patch in good shape (no crashing, minimum text errors) in a month or two, not to fix everything and take forever.

04-30-2000 To Beta Testers: From the WWWBoard I see that many of you are enjoying the game as well as submitting reports while I was away. That's very good! I'll be compiling a list of bugs/wierd sentences that are suggested to me so far. Check back with the FAQ for Beta Testers later (will take a couple of days). I have already scanned through and answered some questions on the WWWBoard, but for most of bug reports I need time to think before I can reply to them. Don't feel bad if you don't see my response. You will see my response in the FAQ later. For gameplay questions, you can help each other. out. I know the answer to many of your questions, but I don't really have time to reply to all of them. If you haven't, check out the link page for some sites with FAQs. These will cover 95% of all the questions you guys raise. I have replied some questions that cannot be easily found in them.

Snowman/Tiberius bug: this serious bug will be tackled soon and a bug-fix will be released.

Okay, I have got back and get ready to work! If you take a look at the WWWBoard, there are many posts, which means I will have quite some work to do! To keep things short, I'll begin the correct-and-debug process after tomorrow. And tonight I'll try to reply messages and probably update the beta FAQs. Unexpectedly, someone is interested in where I come from. Well, that's a secret :P, but I can tell you that my native language is Chinese. If you have anything Chinese you want me to translate, feel free to let me know. I'm okay in reading Japanese, but you can easily find people better than me in translating Japanese stuffs.

04-24-2000 To Beta Testers: I have already got some feedbacks from a few of you. To avoid too many overlaps on report, I have established an FAQ for Beta Testers. Take a look for bug report guidelines, and commonly asked questions. Also try to report bug or ask game play questions on my WWWBoard. This can avoid the same bug being reported too many times. Of course if you need to send me screenshots/save game, please do it after midnight (EST) April 30th as I'll be out town. I don't want my e-mail account to crash.

I should have replied e-mails to all the applicants, whether they are chosen or not. Check the progress page for the list of beta testers. If your name is there, but you still haven't got a patch, let me know. If you haven't got my reply, may be I have missed you (the list is long). However, all positions are filled and no more beta testers will be accepted for now. May be next round.

Good news to other big fans is that many beta testers have already got passed the Prologues of the game. A few work very hard and have already submitted bug reports more than once. When I got back from my course, I'll try my best to fix all the bugs and release the second beta patch. I can't give you a release date, though.

04-23-2000 To Beta Testers: make sure you apply the patch to a clean Japanese rom, or it won't work.

Thanks for many big fans of the game, I have already got about 30 applicants, and I have only 10 more positions left for these people. So I think I'll close the beta tester request here. No more e-mails on beta test request please. For the ones that I have received e-mails I'll reply to you whether you are selected or not, and the selected candidates will be listed in the Progress page later when I sort the things out. Don't worry, if every beta tester is doing their job, the public patch will be released pretty soon.

I'll be taking a course out town from the coming Tuesday to Sunday. So if you send me anything after Tuesday, I probably won't be able to reply until May 1st. Just let you know, in case you send me bug reports and I'm not responding.

04-22-2000 Today I release the beta patch to the team members and beta testers. See the link below for progress if you are new here. Not much to say here except that I still have space for beta testers. Okay, I'll have to put my email here so that you can contact me. But please don't abuse it. When you apply, please give me a reason why you want to do beta test on this game and how you are going to test it. I'll choose among the applicants (if any, but not first come first serve, sorry).

New: I got quite a few application already, but I'm tired right now and have things to deal with tomorrow morning. For those who haven't got a reply, I'll try to reply tomorrow night.

04-21-2000 Okay, I have completely finished the game on Julian and fixed every bug that I have found. This means the Alpha testing phrase is done. There are about 160 bugs that I correct in my 43 hours of play time and many hours of debug time. Not too bad, I think. Anyway, the patch will be available for beta testers tomorrow on April 22. I'll have to clean things up a bit and put up some of the documents that I have written so far. Depending on the free time of the beta testers, I hope beta testing will start soon.

Unlike many other games, this game is almost impossible to be 100% tested. First of all, there are 8 different main characters, and each one has 10% different dialogues that will not be found in other characters. You may say this is simple. Just find 8 people and play it 8 times, right? The real difficulty is the free-scenario system. During the game time, one can do different things and one can do things in different order, and many dialogues will turn out to be dependent on the gameplay! I have played the game twice with Julian, and see how things can be different if the game is played differently. I think I have covered 99% of his dialogues. Still I have quests remained unsolved and ways that I have never thought of. Because of this, I'm planning to find many beta testers (may be 2 for each main characters). I will have to see how this is done.

04-15-2000 As stated in the front page, no beta patch available yet due to various reasons. Alpha test progress update. So far game time is 35 hours, and is roughly 75% tested. But it still take a while to complete. A few new screenshots are added.

04-12-2000 Progress update again. Only one more Lee's file to go. I have made quite some corrections with his script's help, thanks. Progress is still being made, but since this game takes about 50 hours to play test everything, so it's only 50% tested right now. Watch for more news on April 15th or 16th.

04-09-2000 A small update just to let you know that progress is still being made, even though it may be slow. See what have become 100% below! However, on the other hand I find that the business game is glitchy after the insertion. Since it takes time to correct the nasty glitch, I probably will just release the first beta patch without the business game. If progress continues as fast, it is likely that I can make the April 15 release. Don't hold me to that, though.

04-04-2000 Correct a bug in this page which make the background pics fail to load. Update the progress percentage. Business game messages is now 100% complete. It is not yet tested though. I translate a bit on the credit, but I'm not sure whether I should continue, partly because it is so difficult to translate Japanese names to Romanji. I'll probably leave it for now.

04-01-2000 Set up this page to show the progress of the project. Beta patch is not yet available. Put up 21 screenshots. I'm pretty busy right now, so please bear with me with the slow progress. (Tentative beta testing start date: 04-15-2000)
